Texas electrical license renewal

Texas electrician licenses renew annually on the individual expiration date. Most individual classes need 4 hours of TDLR-approved CE each cycle. Contractor firm licenses follow a separate track.

Cycle and reminder

  • Journeyman, master, residential wireman, and related individual licenses: one-year term from issuance
  • TDLR typically sends an email or postcard about 60 days before expiration — you are still responsible if it never arrives
  • Keep contact info current in your TDLR account so reminders reach you

CE hours (most individual licenses)

  • 4 hours of approved continuing education each license term
  • Must cover NEC (or adopted code), Texas electrician law (Occ. Code Ch. 1305), admin rules (16 TAC Ch. 73), and electrical safety (NFPA 70E)
  • Courses must be from a TDLR-registered provider; unapproved hours do not count
  • Hours must fall inside the term of the license you are renewing
  • Multiple license types: usually one 4-hour set per period if taken during that term
  • Electrical contractors and residential appliance installers: CE is not required for those firm / RAI tracks

Fees and late renewal (journeyman example)

  • On-time online renewal fee commonly $30 (confirm current fee on TDLR)
  • Expired 90 days or less: higher fee (commonly $45)
  • Expired 91 days to 18 months: higher fee (commonly $60)
  • Expired over 18 months but under 3 years: mail application plus Request to Executive Director form
  • Expired 3+ years: cannot renew — re-apply as a new applicant
