Texas electrician exam
Texas electrician exams are run by PSI after TDLR approves your license application. Journeyman exams (as of March 2025) are split into knowledge and calculations parts. Exams are open-book with the 2023 NEC — bring your own soft-bound code book.

Who can schedule
- Only after TDLR reviews your completed license application and fee
- TDLR notifies you that you are exam-eligible (email or mail)
- Generally one year from the date TDLR received the application to finish all license requirements, including the exam
- Your name at PSI must match TDLR's file exactly

What the exam covers

- Starting March 11, 2025: Journeyman is two separate parts — knowledge and calculations
- Confirm the exact outline for your class in the PSI bulletin linked from TDLR
References and ID
- Open book — National Electrical Code, 2023 Edition
- Soft-bound NEC only — no loose-leaf, spiral, or ring-bound
- Valid government photo ID with signature and date of birth
- Electronic notepads provided at the site; you bring the code book
Prep that actually helps
- Practice finding answers in the 2023 NEC under time pressure
- For the journeyman split, drill calculations separately from code look-ups
- Use prep materials keyed to the current bulletin — ignore older NEC editions
After you pass
- PSI reports results into the TDLR process
- Finish remaining license items (fees, documents) inside your one-year window
- If you fail, use the bulletin's retake rules and rebook with PSI
