Cycle
- License period: July 1 through June 30
- Renewal due dates and late penalties follow Board rule .0405 — file before the late window closes
- Passing an exam is not a license; renewals keep the listed qualifier active on the firm license
CE hours by classification
- Limited, Intermediate, Unlimited, and special-restricted single-family dwelling: at least 8 hours per license period
- Of those 8: at least half must be in-person classroom or seminar (effective for renewals on/after July 1, 2008)
- Common pattern: 8 classroom, or 4 classroom + 4 online
- Special-restricted FALV, elevator, plumbing/heating, groundwater pump, electric sign, swimming pool: at least 4 hours (often 4 classroom or 2 + 2 online)
- New qualifiers after Jan 1, 2025: free 4-hour Laws and Rules class from Board staff within 12 months (can satisfy 4 hours toward the first renewal)
- Extra hours may carry forward in 2-hour multiples per Board rule — confirm current carryover caps
Who must take CE
- Every listed qualified individual on an active license, including reciprocity listings under G.S. 87-50
- Exemptions exist for recent exam qualifiers, certified illness, and course presenters — check .1101
- In-state residents generally take Board-approved sponsor courses; out-of-state residents have extra approval paths
